This is how entrepreneurs take advantage of social networks to grow.

Social networks have become a perfect channel for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs to make themselves known. It is not in vain that platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are the first choice for entrepreneurs to gain presence and get more clients.

A survey conducted by Ipsos and Facebook worldwide found that Small and medium-sized businesses use the technological tools of Mark Zuckerberg's company's family of applications to promote basic information about their business, communicate with customers, and sell their products and services.

In the case of Colombia, he discovered that SMEs mainly use WhatsApp. In addition, 81% of small business owners said Facebook and Instagram work to meet the needs of their businesses and 59% believe they help them create opportunities in their local communities.

“64% of companies stated that Facebook has led to increased sales. This undoubtedly shows the positive impact that the platform has by providing them with tools that help them be more competitive, productive and, without a doubt, have a greater contribution to the Colombian economy,” said Juan Carlos Consuegra, country director of Facebook for the Andean Region.

Without a doubt, a large number of companies demonstrate the potential of networks. Here are some.

Getting closer to the client

During her master's degree, Emma Eugenia Mesa dedicated herself to researching what was the most consumed typical food in Colombia, finding that they were empanadas. At that time it also became clear that this product is generally made manually and requires a long production time.

Emma E. Founding Board of Maquiempanadas. Maquiempanadas, with ten years in the market, is now seeking to train more entrepreneurs.

After the success of the video, they focused on bringing their product to the digital world, so they decided to open a blog and a fan page on Facebook, which, the co-founder says, helped boost their company. According to Mesa, The presence in this type of digital spaces allowed the company to become known in the world, discovering that its potential clients were not in Colombia but in countries like the United States.; educate people about consumption and the types of empanadas that exist; and have direct contact with customers through communication channels such as WhatsApp.

Maquiempanadas currently has eight patents and two more in the United States. Some of their machines are special for shredding meat, preparing the dough depending on the type of flour used, peeling potatoes and even special machines for making arepas and patacones.

In 2019, Maquiempanadas sold an average of $4,000 million.

In addition to this, Mesa founded a school that seeks to help people who want to have an empanada company or, for those who already have one, to strengthen their entrepreneurship with courses in food handling and business model design.

“You have to be persistent. If you see that the business idea is not profitable, you should resort to innovative, unconventional strategies and think that anywhere in the world there will be a person who wants to purchase your product or service,” concludes Mesa.
